Youbou Real Estate
The community of Youbou is a small—and sometimes overlooked—one. Situated on Cowichan Lake, a 30-kilometer-long body of water that is often touted as one of the most beautiful on the island, this area is recognized as a summer vacation destination with a growing number of year-round residents. Historically, Youbou has its roots in the lumber industry as a mill town, but now is more recognized for its outdoor recreation and luxury waterfront properties. Additionally, high demand combined with the small community boundary means that there are often few listings on the market. The Youbou Market
Youbou is positioned on the north side of Cowichan Lake (and the only substantial community on this side), about 15 minutes from Lake Cowichan. The community itself is only about 5 kilometers from one side to the other. Its real estate market comprises single-family homes and cottages primarily, with a significant portion of these having direct lake access.
Homes for sale in Youbou typically fall into the luxury price bracket. These properties have many desirable features, not limited to scenic views and waterfront locations. For many, these homes are great vacation properties, and lots tend to have some acreage attached, which adds to the privacy of this community. While construction dates for homes in Youbou vary, vacant lots or tear-downs are sometimes available on the market.
Getting Around Youbou
As a semi-rural community, transport is limited to Youbou Road, which connects the community to Lake Cowichan in the east, then wraps around the lake, and connects all the way back around to the South Wellington area up north. Commute times vary, but it is about a 35-minute drive to the city of Duncan. Youbou has a single bus route, the 20, which stops along Youbou Road.
There are a few amenities (shops, restaurants) within the community of Youbou itself. Some of these include the bowling alley, the gas station and general store, Youbou Little League Park, the fire department, and some small businesses. The Youbou Bar & Grill stands as a landmark of the community, and Arbutus Park (which is found in the west end of Youbou) sees summer activities like swimming and picnicking for the entire family.
Top Youbou Highlights & Attractions
As a smaller community, Youbou's appeal lies within its laid-back lifestyle and scenic properties. Because of its lakefront location, outdoor activities are particularly popular with residents. Some year-round options include camping, hiking, and boating. Many who live in Youbou have their own boat or non-motorized watercraft. Cowichan Lake in and of itself is highly-regarded for being particularly clean and warm, so swimming is a favourite during the summer months. While Arbutus Park is the more popular option, Youbou has another park at the opposite end of the community, Price Park. This is a rockier option (in comparison to the sandy beach at Arbutus Park), but there are forest trails and water access.
Additionally, there are other options for outdoor recreation in the Youbou area. For those who want to take a day (or several day!) trip, there are a number of recreation and campsites around the lake. Gordon Bay Provincial Park is found on the opposite shore of Cowichan Lake, and features camping, hiking, and boating opportunities. There are even some small islands and a beach area. Beyond this, Lake Cowichan offers a lot more amenities than Youbou, and is only a short drive away.
